Join us for the opening of Calida Rawles’s first US-based museum solo exhibition, "Away with the Tides". The exhibition bridges the past and present, delving into the experience of Black people in Overtown, a Miami neighborhood that went from a thriving cultural and commercial hub for Black people to a subject of gentrification, systemic racism, and mass displacement.

First, watch “Wade in the Water,” which sets the tone for the discussion around the visual exploration of Black folk’s relationship to water and Calida Rawles’s envisioning of water as a space for Black healing. Then, enjoy a conversation between the artist, filmmaker Cathleen Dean, and Overtown Youth Center CEO Tina Brown, moderated by writer and researcher Nadege Green.

Prior to the conversation, view the new exhibition in the galleries and celebrate on the terrace from 5–7pm with happy hour and live jazz in celebration of the rich musical roots of our neighbors in Overtown.
